ONTIER, Promoting Change in the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in the Dominican Republic

Carlos del Valle, Country Manager at ONTIER Dominican Republic, is now Member of the Board of Directors of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in the Dominican Republic.

Our colleague Carlos del Valle, Country Manager at ONTIER Dominican Republic, was appointed new Member of the Board of Directors of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in the Dominican Republic for 2019-2021. This is the result of the work he started to carry out in October. With the presence of ONTIER in the new Board of Directors, a new chapter is started in the Chamber with the aim of implementing change to help the Chamber reach its full potential. ONTIER thus becomes the driving force behind the change in the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in the country.

Business associations and chambers of commerce play an important role in the Dominican Republic. Spain is the second strongest investor in the country, following the United States, and therefore 'it is important for the Chamber of Commerce to remain an active institution that allows business exchanges between members of the Chamber and defends their commercial interests,' says Carlos.

Following the example of Lorenzo Hernández, ONTIER Country Manager in Mexico, Carlos tells us that one of the first things they did when ONTIER landed in the Dominican Republic was contacting the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in the country. 'We raised the possibility of ONTIER having an active participation in the Chamber, not only as members, but as a member of the Board of Directors. We decided to present the firm before the Board of Directors and offered to support the Chamber in an active way, referring to the work carried out by our colleague Lorenzo. As a consequence, the Board raised the possibility of designing the foundations of a Strategic Plan for the Chamber for the period 2019-2021' explains our colleague. According to him, this strategic plan is focused on relaunching the Chamber's activity, encouraging a greater dynamism of the members and suggesting different initiatives, such as creating an Energy Commission or a Tourism Commission, important sectors for Spanish investment in the country.

'It was necessary to share our ideas regarding the Strategic Plan with the members of the Chamber,' explains Carlos. So, the next step took place in March, when the board asked him to present this Plan to the membership. 'The essence, the work that the plan intends to do, is to encourage members' participation, getting members to actively participate in the activities of the Chamber and to carry out activities for the Chamber itself in order to achieve an effective business exchange,' says Carlos.

One of the changes implemented is the creation of an app for the management of the Chamber, which allows to visualise the activity of the Chamber and the commissions from mobile devices, making it easier to share the information of the activities carried out. 'The digital app allows you to remove borders and attract both members and investment from Spain through the Chamber before they actually arrive at the Dominican Republic. A great opportunity for ONTIER, as it will allow us to contact and meet potential clients before they arrive. This is something that no other Chamber of Commerce in the Dominican Republic is doing.

The appointment of Carlos del Valle as a member of the Board of Directors sets this challenge in motion. Our colleague states that 'ONTIER is not joining the Board of Directors to hold a passive role, but to reactivate the Chamber itself and do different things.'
